TRUE CONFESSIONS

Regional golf publications rely on advertisers for our existence. We would not be able to do what we do if not for advertisers. At Golf Minnesota we have always had a wonderful group of businesses who advertise with us, most of whom tell us they like what we do. The advertisers who don’t run coupons sometimes wonder if their advertising dollars generate business for themselves, and we wonder that too. But a lot of them tell us what we do increases awareness of and excitement for golf and that is good for the game regardless of a quantifiable dollar for dollar ROI.

We again have a great group of advertisers in this issue and we encourage you to patronize their businesses. There is one conspicuously missing advertiser this year and we encourage you to spend your money with them as well. We at Golf Minnesota have been excited about the U.S. Women’s Open coming to Minnesota since it was announced a few years ago. We have always been big supporters of women’s golf. There are 3 lady golfers in my family alone, one of whom rifled a 7 iron into the cup on a 92 yard par 3 last year. We love doing positive things for the game, like our Hilary Lunke clinic we put on for junior girls after she won the Open in 2003. Look for similar events this year. And we think seeing the greatest women golfers in the world, at a historic venue like Interlachen will be an event of a generation for golf fans in Minnesota. For some reason, someone named Bruno, who apparently makes decisions for the USGA, decided they should not spend any advertising dollars with Golf Minnesota. That’s okay, some people like to take more than they give and Bruno just hasn’t learned to play well with others.

As far as the true confessions go, we also walk a fine line between journalism and making a living. Often, but not always, the person selling the advertising is the same person writing about the product. Sometimes we even allow an advertiser to provide an article, but we always make sure we believe what is being said before we print it. We will never intentionally tell you, our valuable readers, anything that is not true. You do not need to advertise with us to get a story. There are several non-advertisers we write about in this issue as there has always been. But we will continue to support our advertisers and give them the most coverage. We sometimes joke that we sell paper and ink. That’s not far from the truth. We hope you like the way we turn it into a golf message. Enjoy this issue of Golf Minnesota.
