Interactive Learning System on CD with Photoshop, Illustrator,
PageMaker, Marzware, Extensis and QuarkXPress
This Interactive Learning System is used by thousands of printers, designers, service bureaus and advertising agencies worldwide. Our training focuses on the essentials of image, illustration and layout production by explaining the concepts and the actual steps required to create quality printed documents.
The system included on the CD's, has been developed to provide desktop publishers with knowledge and problem solving capabilities. These skills will help to reduce the cost of creating final film for printing. With the CD's are tutorials, multimedia movies, and non-computer based lessons to assist in visualizing and implementing the concepts learned. Our objective is to assist in the learning process and to provide tools that allow users to increase productivity and profitability.
Here is an endorsement letter from Richard Brock of Saturn Graphics
Knowledge Is Power
Lack of information, on how to properly create a PostScript file causes an immense amount of waste in our industry, larger pre-press departments have the budgets to hire experienced well-schooled operators but smaller shops usually have to learn from their experience, hearsay and extra fees from output service bureaus.
To make matters worse, many small shop owners don't personally know all the ins and outs of electronic publishing programs such as QuarkXPress, PageMaker, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. So, when an employee leaves, the information his shop has accumulated at great expense many times, walks out the door along the no longer employed technician.
- Take a look at this short list of critical issues;
1. Crossover images (images that span more than one page)
2. How to trap white
3. How to get EPS colors in Illustrator to separate properly in QuarkXPress
4. Machine font styling vs. built-in font styling
5. How to properly rotate an image
6. Resizing trapped images
7. When to use EPS and TIF images.
8. How to properly convert from RGB to CMYK in PhotoshopOn how many of the above issues could you provide the correct answer or explanation?
Digital Media, Inc. has created a series of CDs called Desktop InteractiveLearning Publishing Series that addresses these problems, and they've done a great job. I first saw the CDs at Print '97 and purchase the Photoshop and Quark CDs for myself. All of the titles are prepared with the printing professional in mind. They're not just an automated Instruction manual. Rather, they're specific answers to specific issues that relate to getting the image from the computer screen to the printed page the way you want it to on the first try. Most of the knowledge presented, you won't find in the standard instruction manual.
Each CD is divided into two sections: 1) Concepts and 2) Tutorials. Once You learn the problems and solutions in the Concepts Section, the Tutorial section uses voice over narration and animation to illustrate the correct way to use the program to effect the solution. The Tutorial can be either in the form of a movie that you sit back and watch, or interactive, in which you're prompted to select the correct menu items. Each Tutorial (and there are usually three or more on each CD) has a quiz at the end to verify that you really got the message. All of the titles have been prepared with the assistance of the software manufacturers as well as power users and service bureaus.

Don Nguyen West America Graphics Foothill Ranch, CAA real solution to a real problem
"I've been a supporter of the small graphic arts shop for years and feel your product provides a real solution to a real problem. The large companies in this industry (Agfa, Kodak, etc.) have ignored the needs of the smaller digital prepress outfits in regards to sharing technology at an affordable rate. The result of this is lots of overworked and frustrated business owners whose daily lives are one long game of catch-up and solving problems that never should have happened in the first place. You should be proud of your product."I appreciate the preflight CD offer, as I have the Extensis product on my system and use it on prospective customer files prior to my demonstrating the imagesetters I sell. Just as I learned a lot from your other CDs, I'm anxious to know more about the proper way to utilize the preflight tool."
Dick Brock Westminster, CAThe best training for Quark and Illustrator
"You'll be getting calls from some people I've referred, because you have the best products for training in Quark and Illustrator. It's a life-saver. When I've been against the wall and didn't know where to go, it's been like and answer man for me."
Juan Urzua GTS Graphics Commerce, CAMaster the basics in a week and a half
"Diana had no background in either computers or graphic design; actually her background is in retail clothing. I let her learn at her own pace from your discs on Illustrator, Quark and PageMaker. In a week and a half she mastered the basics exclusively from Digital Media's products, and is now second-in-command of the graphics department. Clients also love the discs."
Ave Bernard Owner, Panorama Press Van Nuys, CAThe best presentation of trapping
"I've been real happy with the Illustrator tutorial. It's the best presentation of trapping I've come across; even better than bringing someone into the shop to train them. I've found it helps my customers avoid AH charges and author-instigated trapping problems. "The 'do's and don'ts' on your Quark product are on the safe side, and I like that. This disc will be very beneficial for people in production and in prepress."
